Hugh Keenleyside Dam

Learn about our facilities and how we operate our system

B.C.’s population is continuing to grow, and we’re investing to support the energy needs of more British Columbians and the economic activity that they’ll generate.

Built largely in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, many parts of our infrastructure are in need of refurbishment and expansion in order to meet the growing population expansion and energy needs. We’re upgrading, and in some cases replacing our oldest assets such as aging high-voltage transmission lines, dams and power generating stations.

Rights of way & power lines

Power lines, whether overhead or underground, are designed to be safe. We have detailed guidelines for compatible use or development near power lines.

Our facilities

Learn where our dams are across B.C. Over 80% of our installed generating capacity is at hydroelectric installations in the Peace and Columbia river basins.

Transmission

Our high-voltage transmission system consists of 18,286 kilometres of transmission lines, operating at voltages from 60 kV to 500 kV.

Dam safety

How we manage the safety of our structures that retain the reservoirs and control the passage of water that flows through, around and beyond our dams.

Water, flows and reservoirs

We provide the latest available data on reservoir levels, along with information on water use planning.

Thermal generation

We operate combustion turbine generating stations – which burn fuel to produce hot gases or steam – at both Prince Rupert and Fort Nelson.

International power lines

Information about our international distribution and transmission power lines.

Importing and exporting power

Our trading subsidiary, Powerex, can buy and sell power with other utilities in western North America.
